Tarifa is home to some of the best kitesurfing spots in Europe, but choosing the right beach depends entirely on the wind direction.
In this guide, we’ll show you the best places to kitesurf in Tarifa based on the day’s conditions, helping you enjoy a safer and more enjoyable session.
Best Kitesurf Spots for Poniente Wind
When the Poniente wind is blowing, you’ll have plenty of options.
Some of the most popular beaches include:
- Valdevaqueros Beach
- Arte Vida
- Los Lances North
- Tarifa Town Beach (outside the summer restrictions)
During the summer months, the thermal Poniente at Valdevaqueros Beach is often the best choice, offering reliable afternoon wind and excellent riding conditions.
Keep in mind that certain beaches in Tarifa town are closed to kitesurfing during the summer season, so always check the local regulations before launching.

Best Kitesurf Spots for Levante Wind
For Levante conditions, the two most popular spots are Valdevaqueros Beach and Los Lances North.
Valdevaqueros Beach
Valdevaqueros usually offers more stable wind, making it a favourite among many riders.
Because of its popularity, it can become quite busy, especially during the high season.
Los Lances North
If you prefer more space on the water, Los Lances North is often the better option.
The beach is generally less crowded while still providing excellent Levante conditions.
Both beaches also offer rescue boat services, giving riders additional peace of mind during their session.
Other Levante Spots
Balneario
Balneario is one of Tarifa’s most famous kitesurf spots and is often ridden by highly experienced local and professional riders.
Although it’s an incredible location, it offers only a narrow riding area with offshore wind and rocks nearby.
For these reasons, we do not recommend Balneario for beginners or intermediate riders.
La Bajeta
La Bajeta is located approximately 3 kilometres offshore and should only be considered by highly experienced riders with proper boat support.
Strong currents, changing conditions, and the distance from shore make it unsuitable for anyone riding alone or without safety assistance.
Kitesurfing with South Winds
South winds in Tarifa are usually associated with winter storms and unstable weather.
Under these conditions, the area near the Valdevaqueros dune is often the most sheltered option.
However, always pay close attention to the waves, as they can become much larger and more powerful than expected.
Stay Safe and Choose the Right Spot
No matter where you decide to ride, safety should always come first.
Choose a spot that matches your skill level, check the latest weather and wind forecasts, and whenever possible, avoid kitesurfing alone.
